Basingstoke Voluntary Action Early Resolution Services (ERS)

Resolve Conflict Early. Protect Your Organisation.

Why would I choose Early Resolution instead of legal action?

People often choose Early Resolution because it is:

  • Faster – disputes can resolve in weeks, not years

  • Lower cost – avoids escalating legal fees

  • Less stressful – structured, calm conversations

  • Confidential – unlike public court proceedings

  • Practical – solutions are designed to work in real life

For businesses, it also protects relationships, reputation and productivity.

Will Early Resolution work if things are already tense?

Yes — many disputes come to Early Resolution after communication has broken down.

The role of a mediator or facilitator is to manage that tension, keep conversations constructive, and ensure everyone is heard safely.

You don’t need a “good relationship” to start — just a willingness to explore a way forward.

When might Early Resolution not be suitable?

Early Resolution may not be appropriate if:

  • There is immediate risk to someone’s safety

  • Urgent legal action is required

  • One party is unwilling to engage at all

That’s why an early suitability check is important.

How it works

Step 1: Free Triage & Signposting

Your first step is a confidential triage conversation.

We will:

  • Listen to your situation

  • Help you understand what’s happening

  • Identify practical options

  • Signpost you to the most appropriate next step

There is no cost for this initial support.

Sometimes, this conversation alone is enough to help you move forward with clarity.

Step 2: Tailored Support (If Needed)

Where further support is required, we offer access to services through the Mediation Agency at accessible Tier 3 rates for charities.

This may include:

  • Mediation (for resolving disputes between individuals or groups)

  • Conflict coaching (to support individuals managing difficult situations)

  • Facilitated conversations

  • Structured early resolution support

We will always explain your options clearly—there is no obligation to proceed.

Common Situations We Support

  • Disagreements between volunteers or staff

  • Tensions between trustees and operational teams

  • Complaints that are becoming more complex or personal

  • Communication breakdowns within teams

  • Concerns that may affect service delivery

  • Situations where relationships are becoming strained

If something “doesn’t feel right” or is starting to escalate, it’s the right time to talk.

What You Can Expect

  • Confidential and impartial support

  • A calm, structured approach

  • Practical guidance—not legal jargon

  • Fast access to experienced professionals

  • A focus on early, constructive resolution

Whether the issue involves staff, volunteers, trustees, or service users, our aim is simple:
help you take the right next step - before things escalate.

What is an Early Resolution Service?

Early Resolution Services are a practical, confidential support pathway designed to help charities address conflict at an early stage.

We understand that many organisations:

  • Don’t have internal HR or conflict resolution expertise

  • Are managing sensitive situations with limited time and resources

  • Want to do the right thing, but aren’t sure how to approach it

Accessing an ERS gives you a clear, supportive route forward.

Who is this for?

This service is available to all members of BVA, including:

  • Charity leaders and managers

  • Trustees and boards

  • Volunteer coordinators

  • Community organisations and CICs

If you’re dealing with a situation that feels difficult, uncertain, or is starting to affect your organisation—this service is for you.
