What is a money claim?
A money claim is a court claim to recover money you believe a person or business owes you. In England and Wales, this is made through the County Court, sometimes described as taking someone to the “small claims court”. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different processes.

Before starting proceedings, options may include a written payment request, direct negotiation, an agreed payment plan or mediation. Legal advice can help where the position is unclear.

Mediation brings in an impartial professional to help both sides explore an agreement. The mediator does not decide who is right or order anyone to pay.
Owed Money? When could mediation help?
Mediation may help with unpaid invoices, personal loans, refunds or disputed charges—particularly where communication has stalled, the amount is disputed or repayment arrangements need discussing.

It may be less suitable where someone cannot participate safely or freely, urgent court protection is needed, or there is no realistic scope for agreement. Where money is unavailable, debt advice may be a useful first step.
How our service works
-
Start for free. Use the checker or request an initial assessment to explore whether our service could help.
-
Choose further support. Paid formal assessment and enquiry handling services explore suitability in more detail. Where appropriate and authorised, we can invite the other person and separately assess their willingness and needs. We explain fees before you commit.
-
Access three hours of resolution support. Work with a human mediator through shuttle discussions—speaking separately with each side—or a joint, face-to-face conversation where appropriate. The format is agreed around the circumstances and participants.
-
Record the outcome. We help clarify agreed terms, responsibilities and payment dates. A post-mediation check-in service can help review progress.
What can mediation achieve?
-
Full Settlement: agreement resolves all issues.
-
Partial Settlement: some issues are agreed; others remain unresolved.
-
No Settlement: no agreement is reached. We'll help you identify your options.
Settlement may include a lump sum, an agreed reduced amount or a payment plan. Nobody has to accept a proposed settlement.

Our service offers responsive scheduling, flexible discussions and affordable options for individuals and businesses. Solicitors, accountants and other professional advisers can also enquire about referring clients.
We provide independent resolution support, rather than legal advice or debt enforcement. Settlement and repayment cannot be guaranteed.

Already have a court claim? Our independent service is not limited by the HMCTS £10,000 free mediation ceiling. We provide more time, greater flexibility, and clear costs.
